X-Men: Days of Future Past

Who cares about those Avengers when you have the X-Men!

I miss the days when these movies came out on my birthday weekend. Oh wells, at least they still release during my birthday month! Counting down already to May 2014…

A Deathly Hallows Pumpkin

Last year as Sandy blew into town, Amanda and I set out to create a Hunger Games inspired pumpkin – here! This year’s, however, after throwing out potential Orphan Black and Harry Potter references, settled on the uniquely ominous Death Hallows symbol from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

A quick recap :: the Deathly Hallows symbol consists of three geometric shapes. The triangle represents Harry’s Invisibility Cloak, the circle represents the Resurrection Stone and the skinny rectangle (or line) represents the Elder Wand. If you are in possession of all three, you become the master of death! Well, at least in the wizarding world of Harry Potter…

But I digress. We had two options when it came to our pumpkin carving plan. We could go the easy way or the hard way. This was the easy way with the light creating a silhouette ::

But who are we to want a mediocre, run of the mill pumpkin when we could create greatness? So we got to work and while I used my non-aversion to all things innards and slimy, Amanda took out her architecture tools (ruler, grid notebook, protractor, pencils, x-acto knife, etc.) and created the most geometrically accurate symbol I’ve seen.

Once I had pulled out the “insides” of Cosima (we named the pumpkin after an Orphan Black character after all!) and smoothed out the interior the best I could, Amanda cut away the shapes we would need to achieve our illuminated design.

In the end, with scaffolding in place consisting of chopsticks and straws and two back doors in which to light the tea candles inside, we successfully created a floating and illuminated Deathly Hallows symbol.

Now the question is, how will we top this next year?

Happy [almost] Halloween!
